Reina 4 is Ibouyen's queen in blue: an Amazigh woman crowned in silver, her face marked in the old tradition, a white bird resting in her hennaed hands. Reina means queen, and across the series that is how Ibouyen paints the women of his north.

Ibouyen

Ibouyen is a Tangier-based visual artist working in shadow, dream and colour, drawing on Amazigh symbolism to build a personal visual language. He has held a solo show at the Donkey Museum, painted murals for the Spring Festival, and was included in Street Art Inside in Rabat.

Reina means queen. In Ibouyen's Reina series, that is exactly how these women are painted. Here, an Amazigh woman is crowned in a silver headdress, her face marked in the old tradition, a small white bird resting in her hennaed hands. The whole portrait is worked in blue, the colour that runs through all of Ibouyen's work, from the indigo of her hair to the beads at her throat.

Ibouyen is a visual artist from Tangier who builds his images out of shadow, dream and Amazigh symbolism. Reina 3 is that language at its most tender, less a record of a face than the feeling of one.
