THE ARTIST

Zakaria Wakrim

Born in 1988, Zakaria Wakrim is a visionary photographer who navigates the cultural landscapes between Spain and Morocco.

His artistic journey is defined by a profound understanding of photography's power.

“My photography interest began in 2007 while studying optics and the human visual perception. A feeling that was triggered by a simple luminous captured frame, which fascinated me”

Wakrim's early works were marked by a spirit of experimentation, pushing the boundaries of human perception through innovative techniques.

This bold approach quickly earned him recognition as an "Emerging Artist" in his homeland, Morocco.

However, Wakrim's artistic evolution led him to apply these experimental methods to deeper, more conceptual territory.

The result consists in layers of visual stories that have a narrative and a conceptual side.

His visual research is constant; he believes that the photographic language is organic.

“Photography is sort of a witness, a lyrical way to be presented. It allows you to stand back and see further, to grasp the shape of things. To extract emotional content from a visual frame.”

His photo series are willing to occupy the narrative field, stories that give sense to local identity.

The fast sense of change that is happening in North Africa blurs the frontiers between the old and the new.

The intersection is hard to state as the old is easily forgotten and scavenged by the new.

Documenting the sense of change, becomes a way to understand it better, in order to deal with identity as a starting point for culture.
